The Sheriff, Maus Waiting for you
on the Rainbow Bridge
Sheriff of the Chaos Realm | Law and Order

Let it be known: the Chaos Realm had a sheriff, and his enforcement strategy was kisses.

Before the badge, though, there was a rougher story. Somewhere in the Carolinas, before anyone here knew him, something happened to Maus that nobody was ever able to fully piece together. His ears carried the damage — frostbite, or burn, or something worse, no one could say for certain. He had a broken fang that had to come out, and his back teeth were ground down flat, the unmistakable mark of a dog who'd spent time trying to chew his way through a chain. He arrived on May 5th, 2018, carrying all of that, plus heartworm and spinal issues that would affect his mobility for the rest of his life.

None of it slowed him down for one single day. He took one look at the situation, decided he was in charge now, and got to work.

The Sheriff

Maus's patrol route covered the entire property. His jurisdiction was self-declared and absolute. His primary tool of law enforcement was licking every creature he encountered until they, too, understood that things were now Under Control. He won a best-kisser contest — officially — and treated the title with the gravity it deserved.

He also knew, without ever being taught, exactly when to drop the act. The goofball who leaned his full body weight on visitors and announced every snack like breaking news was the same dog who could go quiet and steady the second something actually mattered. That's the part that made him a real sheriff, not just a funny one.

Superpowers, According to Maus

Water slid right off his coat, which he treated as evidence of his own personal excellence rather than a fact about his fur. He also carried a scent — a genuinely, inexplicably good one — that the people who loved him swear became a trigger for nothing but happy memories. He knew this about himself. He used it liberally.

Ziggy

There was a search, at one point, for a friend for Ziggy — a dog with extremely specific and non-negotiable taste. Several candidates were introduced. None of them landed. Then Maus arrived, and it was instant, total, no negotiation required — for Ziggy, and for everyone watching it happen. The two of them became a package deal on the spot, and no one who saw it ever tried to separate them again.

The Familiar

There's a theory that's held quietly and with real weight around the sanctuary: that Maus wasn't just an exceptional dog, but a familiar — part of a spirit-line that's been arriving in this family for over forty years, right when it was needed most. His birthdate falls startlingly close to the passing of Na-Nyuk, a familiar before him. Whether or not you buy into that, it's hard to argue with the timing, and harder still to argue with how completely Maus seemed to already know his job the day he showed up.

Sheriff, Always

Maus's badge went quiet on October 13th, 2025. The Chaos Realm still runs on the standard he set: patrol hard, love harder, and never pass up a chance for a kiss. He was, by unanimous vote, the goodest of good bois — a hundred-pound heart wrapped in chaos, merriment, and a sheriff's unshakable sense of duty.
